Beginners, Yoga, and Fun
Beginners, yoga, and fun are words that go hand in hand. If you have decided to do yoga, you probably have some questions. This article should give you a good start by pointing you in the right direction.
The first thing you need to do is to find a style of yoga that is right for you. For most beginners, yoga is a new world. The wealth of new information can be overwhelming. However, by simply doing some research on the internet or in the library, you can find out a lot about the different styles of yoga and the entire new yoga world. If you read some of my other articles, you can find some more information on specific types of yoga. I would suggest the hatha style as the best style to start with, but the important thing is to find the type you like.
Once you have settled on the type of yoga you think you might like to try, finding a class that teaches the type is the easy part. Again, the internet is a great way to find yoga instructors in your area. You can also consult classified ads in your local paper. More than likely, a gym in your area is teaching classes.
After you have settled on a type and found a class you would like to attend, you should find out the type of materials you need. In most classes for beginners, yoga instructors do not really expect new students to bring anything but a good attitude. If you stick with it, you might want to by your own yoga mat or even some equipment you can use to practice at home between weekly classes.
If you live in an area where there is no instructor, do not worry. There are other ways to learn yoga. For instance, you can learn more through reading books on different styles. In addition, videos can also be a helpful resource. In the case of many beginners, yoga books and videos are important no matter the situation. Even if you have access to an instructor, having something to guide you during your time at home is helpful to getting your poses down faster.
The final thing is to set some expectations for yourself and what you hope to gain out of doing yoga. Do you want to lose weight, get toned, or simply find a new way to relax? All of these things are good reasons to do yoga.
